Spent an interesting Saturday - went over to our friends to watch the match - great to see United win for once although it felt a bit like running gradnma over! I mean, did they have a chance? We didn't really need a goalkeeper. It was great to se Ronaldo actually pull of a few of his tricks. You never know he might be getting good! Dennis Wise's antics made me laugh - and shout! And the referee needed glasses - but then he is 48.
Had a great BBQ afterwards - nothing better than spending an evening in the peak district with a glass of fine wine, some excellent meat and salad and even better company!
Got home and put the kids to bed and flopped in front of the TV and saw that Black Hawk Down was on Sky. I have avoided watching this for so long. But I succumbed. It was horrible. Grisly effects; awful militarism; slushy acting. Some of the film has really stuck in my head - not least the stupidity of war. There is a scene where a Somali warlord (as opposed to an American warlord) says that war is simply a way of life, that nothing would be achieved by American interference, that liberal democracy would not be the solution for Mogadishu's problems. I think he was right. The next day I saw a trailer for some C4 or BBC2 documentary of 16 people caught up in war - one was a 13 year girl who had lost both parents - her hope in life now was her being a soldier and fighting for a cause.
I sat and had lunch with some friends from church the day after (more socialising!) and reflected on how cut off we are - how unreal our societ yis from what most people experience. I am so privileged. My kids are so privileged. My society is so privileged.
Came home last night reflecting on this and lo and behold after watching Topgear while I was doing the ironing (hilarious programme - including some wonderful dialogue about Christian car drivers who parade round with fishes on their bums and get everyone really cross!), I saw that 'O' was on Sky - so watched that - a modern remake of Othello. Now I don't know Othello but did have some idea of the plot. I was really impressed with the whole film - again a kind of questioning of society - what is it all about. What does white middle class America do. Oden/Othello is a black guy rehabilitated into a white middle class society. Hugo (Shakespeare's Iago) really twists his mind playing on fear and jealousy and the worst of humanity. The tragedy is that Hugo is the monster, the thug, while Oden is the thug turned innocent who is forced by Hugo to turn back to his thuggish ways. Civilization decivilizes. Middle class white America actually turns psychotic. it wasn't Shakespeare but it did make me think and put a cap on a disturbing weekend - again in the comfort of my house and with friends and peace all around.

And Fahrenheit 911 won in Cannes! Sounds like Supersize Me was much better. Super website.
Where are we going? I have to wonder sometimes whether we are entering the last days...what will it be like then?
Some wonderful dialogue clips from the Cannes site:
GORDON BOBBIT, Marketing Manager, Kalmar Inc (equipment supplier to US Army)
There's no other single area of the world today with the opportunity for business, new business, similar to the opportunity that's available today in Iraq.
BLAINE OBER, President, High Protection Company (Atlanta-based Armored Vehicles)
Unfortunately, at least for the near term, we think it's going to be a good situation. err, a dangerous situation. Good for business, bad for the people.
MICHAEL MOORE
Governor Bush. it's Michael Moore.
GEORGE W. BUSH
Behave yourself, will you? Go find real work.
A few days ago I criticized Tommy Lapid - the Israeli justice minister. Yesterday he told the Israeli Cabinet that the pictures from Rafah/Tel Sultan reminded him of his grandmother's experience in the Holocaust. I think he got into trouble for saying that. Bless you, Tommy. You probably don't realise how prophetic you words really are!
