The Empire of Emotion

This inner realm is illuminated by science, but it is not a dry, mechanistic place.  It is an emotional and an enchanted place.  If the study of the conscious mind highlights the importance of reason and analysis, study of the unconscious mind highlights the importance of passions and perception.  If the outer mind highlights the power of the individual, the inner mind highlights the power of relationships and the invisible bonds between people.  If the outer mind hungers for status, money, and applause, the inner mind hungers for harmony and connection - those moments which self-consciousness fades away and a person is lost in a challenge, a cause, the love of another or the love of God.

If the conscious mind is like a general atop a platform, who sees the world from a distance and analyzes things linearly and linguistically, the unconscious mind is like a million little scouts.  The scouts careen across the landscape, sending back a constant flow of signals and generating instant responses.  They maintain no distance form the environment around them, but are immersed in it.  They scurry about, interprenetrating other minds, landscapes, and ideas.

These scouts coat things with emotional significance. They come across an old friend and send back a surge of affection.  They descend into a dark cave and send back a surge of fear.  Contact with a beautiful landscape produces a feeling of sublime elevation.  Contact with a brilliant insight produces delight, while contact with unfairness produces righteous anger.  Each perception has its own flavour, texture, and force, and reactions loop around the mind in a stream of sensations, impulses, judgments and desires.

These signals don't control our lives, but they shape our interpretation of the world and they guide us, like a spiritual GPS, as we chart our courses.  If the general thinks in data and speaks in prose, the scouts crystallize with emotion, and their work is best expressed in stories, music, image, prayer, and myth.

Just wow! Amazing...I think I need to read this everyday for the next week to let it sink in... 

Note the links to social media and the "We think" revolution - the move away from modernist knowledge-based strategies through to an engagement with the core of who we are  - not our thinking selves but our feeling, appreciating, artistic selves.  Come on, Church!  We need to here this - this man is speaking in our language - or at least in the language the church spoke before the domination of the word over art and music and wonder and awe!

A Biblical Reflection on Lady Gaga's 'Judas' and John 8 #bigbible #judas

I was asked to give a biblical reflection as part of the Sex and Gender course at Cranmer Hall/Wesley Study Centre this morning.  I wondered what to do and decided to focus on Lady Gaga's new video, 'Judas', and see what Biblical Texts jumped out of the page, as it were.  I watched it a few times and was struck very very strongly that the key text was John 8 and the story of the woman caught in adultery - not least because the video ends with a lone woman being stoned.

So here is the video:

 

And here is the scripture, John 8:3-11:

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.  But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.  At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”  “No one, sir,” she said.   “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
